Pre-admission testing before surgery

Pre-admission testing (PAT) at Ascension St. Vincent’s sites of care in Birmingham, Alabama, provides your surgeon and anesthesiologist with important information about your current state of health before your surgery.

Suggested parking: Building 3 at the OrthoSports Center provides the most convenient parking. Once in the parking deck, please make sure to use the elevators labeled OrthoSports Center – the first elevator when coming up the ramp. The entrance is on Level K. Valet parking service is also available from 5:30am - 5pm in front of the OrthoSports Center.

What to expect at your pre-admission testing appointment

Your care team at Ascension St. Vincent's provides the tests and patient information you will need before having a surgical procedure. If you are under the age of 18, a parent or guardian must sign the consent forms required for testing and surgery. Pre-admission testing includes:

  • Review of your health history and medication information
  • Lab tests, including diagnostic blood tests, urinalysis and other tests ordered by your doctor
  • EKG, if over 50 years of age
  • Information about planned anesthesia

What to bring to your appointment

When you come to pre-admission testing, please bring:

  • Your insurance card for completing your admission form
  • All of the medications you are currently taking, including over-the-counter medications and supplements
    • If you are on blood thinners, including aspirin, we will need written instructions from your doctor if/when to discontinue.  Please contact your prescribing doctor to obtain this information.  Bring to PAT appointment, if possible.  
  • Any doctor orders or records you’ve received
    • If you have a heart or lung disease or other major medical conditions, please contact your doctor to get a surgery clearance.  Bring that form to your PAT appointment, if possible.
  • A copy of your living will and/or durable power of attorney for your medical record (optional)
  • Guardianship papers, if appropriate
  • Social Security card, if available
