Waterjet Ablation Therapy Surgical Treatment for Enlarged Prostate
Waterjet ablation therapy is a new type of surgical treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). At Ascension St. Vincent Evansville, we are proud to be among the first in Southern Indiana to offer this advanced, minimally invasive treatment. Using the power of water delivered with robotic precision, waterjet ablation therapy provides long-lasting relief with low rates of complications, no matter how large your prostate.
What is waterjet ablation therapy?
Waterjet ablation therapy is a resective procedure, which means that the prostate tissue causing symptoms is surgically removed. No incision is made in the abdomen, as the prostate is reached through the urethra. The procedure is performed in the hospital and is done under anesthesia. It typically takes less than an hour and involves an overnight stay.
As the only BPH surgical procedure that integrates ultrasound imaging with the standard camera (called a cystoscope), our surgeons are able to see the entire prostate in real time and map which parts of the prostate they want to remove. This mapping also enables our surgeons to avoid removing the parts of the prostate that cause irreversible complications like erectile dysfunction, ejaculatory dysfunction, and incontinence.
Once a surgical map is created, a robotically-controlled, heat-free waterjet removes the prostate tissue that was outlined by the surgeon. This robotic technology minimizes human error in removing prostate tissue, and ensures the prostate tissue is removed precisely, consistently, and predictably. In clinical studies, men who had waterjet ablation therapy had very low rates of irreversible complications.
