New Women and Infants Hospital brings care to Indiana families on one campus

Advanced care for women and infants comes to Indianapolis in 2024 with the Women and Infants Hospital on the Ascension St. Vincent Hospital campus.

When expecting moms in Indianapolis choose care, they choose care for their whole family. That's why a new Women and Infants Hospital will open this fall, providing care for both mom and baby. This new hospital will be the first in Central Indiana offering high risk mom and baby a room together, known as couplet care.

Whether you have a birth plan, high-risk concerns or premature delivery, this new location will provide the highest level of care for mothers and infants with the most complex and critical cases while keeping moms and babies under the same roof, or even in the same room.

"A family-centered approach will allow us to treat the most high-risk pregnancies as well as the low-risk ones that can go south at a moment's notice. Under any circumstance, whether it's the baby or the mom (or both) who need care urgently, separating a mother from her newborn is not ideal," said Julie Schnieders, MSN, CNP, Vice President of Women's and Pediatrics Service Line at Ascension St. Vincent. "They need time to bond, become familiar, and connect. We will be able to offer maternal and NICU care all in one place with all of the services that may be needed in the case of a complex medical situation."

This new building will open fall 2024 and move Ascension St. Vincent Women's Hospital on Township Line Road to the 86th Street Campus. The 268,000 square feet space will feature 109 private Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) rooms for babies who need it and 30 maternity suites for parents to spend time with their newborns. There are also couplet rooms where both moms and babies can receive care in the same room. "Our NICU, currently 97 beds, is going to be bigger. We have babies as young as 22 weeks gestation to term babies who need a little help after being born," said Dr. Reisha Patel, a neonatologist at Peyton Manning Children's Hospital.

Ascension St. Vincent Women's Hospital in Indianapolis has Indiana’s highest designation as one of only two Level IV perinatal centers in Indiana, while Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital is a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. Combining the level of advanced specialized care will give families the best women's health and pediatric care throughout the state and region.
