Every year, a talented and generous group of adults and students volunteer at Ascension Alexian Brothers Rehabilitation Hospital. We work together to make a difference in the lives of our patients, their friends and families, and our care teams. Volunteers are active in customer service. They provide office and clerical support, assisting the nursing floors and outpatient care departments. Volunteers also participate in the weekly sewing committee where a group assembles to create hats, blankets and stuffed animals for the women, infant and Emergency Room units.

We hope you find the commitment to our community to be the most rewarding aspect. By consistently being at your assignment shift every week, you will be caring for patients and visitors who need your help. You will also be providing much-needed support to our care teams and your fellow volunteers.
Minimum age of 16 years at time of application.
- Complete an online volunteer application (new volunteer or returning volunteer).
- Attend an interview session
- Complete health test requirements (performed by Employee Health at no charge to applicant):
- T-spot blood test to confirm negative tuberculosis status
- Blood test to verify immunity to varicella, measles, mumps and rubella
- TDAP vaccine to be administered upon hire; proof of vaccination also accepted
- Annual flu shot is required
- Submit information for a criminal background check and orientation paperwork
- Purchase and receive your uniform
- Receive your volunteer assignment and get started
- Complete onsite training in assigned department upon beginning your assignment (mandatory training sessions will also be scheduled annually for all volunteers)
Typically, you will begin your specific assignment the week after you complete orientation, provided that you've successfully completed all of the requirements. Becoming a volunteer takes a minimum of three weeks from the information session to your start date.

Volunteers must be able and willing to dedicate four hours of service for one day each week. Daily shifts are typically: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. or 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. (times may vary depending on the department's needs).
- Must accrue a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer time before being eligible to request written proof of volunteering for any reason, including but not limited to court ordered service and school program requirements
Frequently asked questions
Do high school/college students volunteer?
Absolutely. Many high school and college students volunteer on evenings and weekends during the school year, and more during the summer. Students are seeking to gain experience in a hospital environment before and during a pre-med major in college, or are fulfilling high school service requirements.
What is the minimum time commitment?
All volunteers are expected to commit to one four-hour shift per week in a designated department. Volunteers may choose to volunteer multiple times per week or in multiple departments.
Is there a COVID vaccination requirement?
All volunteers must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Are there any physical requirements?
Generally, no. However, some positions do require some mild lifting and most departments require a decent amount of standing and walking.
Is it safe to volunteer in a hospital during COVID?
Yes. There are many safety precautions that are taken, including wearing PPE (required personal protective equipment such as masks and eye protection), regular hand sanitizing, a pre-screening self-check that occurs before coming to the hospital, and a screening at the hospital that includes a temperature check.
Do volunteers have any special perks since they don't get paid?
Yes. Each volunteer receives a $5 food voucher for each shift that they work for our cafeteria, in addition to special awards and recognitions during their volunteer experience.
Is there a uniform I have to buy?
Yes. All volunteers must purchase a volunteer uniform that they will own. It costs $20.
Will I be able to make friends? Is volunteering fun?
You will most likely be assigned to a role or department where you are working with other volunteers and associates (hospital employees) who will greatly value your contribution and help. Almost every one of our volunteers say their experience is fun and rewarding. Many ask for additional volunteering opportunities in other departments as well.
Are any health or background checks necessary?
Yes. As part of the volunteer onboarding process, you will meet with our associate health department who will review your vaccination and health records and make sure you receive any shots you need. You will also agree to have a background check run to make sure you are eligible to work in a hospital setting.
Are volunteering jobs hard to learn?
Most volunteering positions are easy or moderately easy to learn. You will quickly feel comfortable working in them. Some positions require more skills and attention to detail. Many volunteers enjoy the challenge of learning to work in those roles.
Can I miss an assigned volunteering time if something comes up?
Yes. Generally, absences are OK if they are periodic and short in duration, and advance notice is given to both the volunteer department and the department in which the volunteer is serving.
