Symptoms for venous diseases include:

  • Burning or tingling sensation
  • Cramping or fatigue in the calves
  • Discoloration below the knee, at the ankles or lower legs

Advanced treatment options for vein conditions

Your vascular specialist uses the latest technology and provides advanced treatment options for vein disorders, including:

Laser and light therapy - This is a noninvasive therapy that treats facial spider veins, rosacea and vascular birthmarks, such as port-wine stains (pink or purple birthmark) and hemangiomas (benign vascular growths).

Radiofrequency VNUS closure - This is a minimally invasive procedure that treats poor circulation of blood in the leg, a condition called venous reflux or insufficiency. If left untreated, varicose veins and other more serious vascular conditions may develop.

Sclerotherapy - This is an injection treatment used to eliminate spider veins and reticular veins (blue or green veins appearing just below the skin’s surface). Sclerotherapy is a cosmetic vein procedure, and may not be a covered benefit through your insurance provider.

Frequently asked questions about vein conditions

  • What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins. When veins are working properly, they return blood to the heart for reoxygenation. In varicose veins, the valve fails, leaks or is damaged. This causes some of your blood to flow away from the heart and pool in one or both legs. Signs of varicose veins may include bulging veins, itchy skin, swelling, heavy-feeling legs, and leg pain that can feel like burning and throbbing.

  • When should I be concerned about my varicose veins?

Talk to your doctor about your health concerns and how your leg symptoms may be affecting your work life and ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods of time. Severely distended varicose veins may lead to long-term mild swelling, blood clots, skin discoloration, and more serious skin and tissue problems, such as ulcers and hard-to-heal wounds.

  • What are spider veins?

Spider veins are closer to the skin’s surface and may appear small, threadlike and wispy. They may also appear red or purple in color. But reticular veins, or “feeder” veins, may appear bluish-green and have a marbled appearance. Spider veins and reticular veins are generally considered a cosmetic condition and usually not covered by insurance.

  • What are facial veins?

Facial spider veins range in size from small, wispy red and purple veins to larger blue-green veins. The small veins are commonly seen on the nose, cheeks and chin. The larger veins may be found in the temple area, around the eyes and along the jawline. These veins typically do not cause pain. Cosmetic vein care is available for these conditions.
