Maintaining the privacy and security of our patient’s information is of the utmost importance to Ascension St. Joseph Hospital. On April 6, 2021 we received notice from CaptureRx - a third party partner in processing pharmacy claims - of a security incident involving a subset of files containing patient information. CaptureRx has since retrieved the information and received confirmation from the perpetrator that no copies were retained. To date, CaptureRx is unaware of any actual or attempted misuse of the affected information.
On February 11, 2021 CaptureRx noticed unusual activity on their system and initiated an investigation. On February 19, 2021, CaptureRx determined that certain files containing Ascension St. Joseph Hospital patient information were extracted from their system. As part of the investigation and mitigation, CaptureRx was able to retrieve the information and received confirmation from the perpetrator that no copies were retained. CaptureRx determined that the following information was affected: full name, date of birth, prescription information, including the prescription number, drug information, prescriber name and National Provider Number, and date written, date of service, and numbers unique to an insurance plan type but not an individual (i.e., BIN, PCN, Group ID). CaptureRx has assured Ascension that no sensitive information, such as social security numbers or individual (member) insurance identification numbers, were affected.
In response to the incident, CaptureRx took steps to confirm the security of their systems and is reviewing their policies and procedures to reduce the likelihood of a similar incident happening again. Ascension, has worked with CaptureRx to notify affected individuals. We also recommend individuals remain vigilant in responding to anyone trying to contact them who knows information related to their prescriptions. Although there is no indication that the information has been misused in any way, it is important to review insurance statements (explanation of benefits) and be aware of anyone who may know this information about you or attempt to sell you medical products or prescription drugs.
