You may have recently received your mammography results and it included a Tyrer Cuzik (TC) risk score. SM Gavini Center for Cancer Prevention is working with Ascension Providence breast care and mammography locations to help you understand:
- Your breast cancer risk
- How to screen for your individualized risk; and
- How to reduce your risk for breast cancer
We are here to help you identify and understand your family history, personal risk factors, and lifestyle behaviors that may impact your risk of cancer.
Understanding your Tyrer Cuzik score
The Tyrer Cuzick (also known as the International Breast Cancer Interventional Study (IBIS)) is a test used to calculate a person’s risk for carrying the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes. Your score is calculated using the following information to estimate your breast cancer risk:
- Age
- Breast density
- Body mass index
- Age of first menstrual cycle
- Obstetric history
- Age at menopause (if applicable)
- Personal history of a benign breast condition that increases breast cancer risk on prior biopsy (hyperplasia, atypical hyperplasia, Lobular Carcinoma in Situ)
- Personal history of ovarian cancer
- Use of hormone replacement therapy
- Family history (including breast and ovarian cancer, Ashkenazi inheritance, genetic testing if done)
If family history of cancer is found to be increasing your risk score, you may need genetic testing. Discuss referral options with your doctor or contact us for more information.
The results
The TC risk assessment estimates your risk for developing breast cancer over a lifetime and includes three result categories: average lifetime risk, intermediate (moderate) lifetime risk, and high lifetime risk.
Average risk
Doctors generally consider a person with a score of less than 15% at average risk for developing breast cancer. A score in this range indicates the person does not necessarily need additional tests outside those generally recommended.
Intermediate risk
A score of 15 to 19% indicates an intermediate risk for developing breast cancer in a woman’s lifetime. Doctors may recommend additional testing for some people at this risk level, such as those with dense breast tissue. Before proceeding, doctors will explain the issues that can arise from additional testing, such as false positives and other risks of mammogram tests. We also discuss potential benefits, concerns, and cost for tests that are not currently covered by insurance, such as FAST MRI or ultrasound.
High risk
Doctors typically consider a score 20% and above a high lifetime risk for developing cancer. They recommend that people in the high risk group get additional screening tests every year, such as a breast MRI. Doctors may also have further recommendations for each individual, such as supplemental ultrasound testing for those with very dense breast tissue.
High lifetime risk
Your doctor and the radiologist may have recommended additional screening and tests for you. If you have a family history of cancer, including breast cancer, you may benefit from genetic screening and counseling.
If you would like to learn more about how to
specifically reduce your risk factors, you can attend an upcoming no-cost class (webinar), where we will discuss the Tyrer Cuzick test, general risk factors, and lifestyle and behavior changes that can help you prevent cancer. You can learn more about how nutrition and your diet, exercise, stress, sleep, alcohol intake, weight, and chronic illnesses affect your risk for cancer.
