Choosing to get bariatric surgery is an important decision. You should know what to expect and how to prepare for your weight-loss journey. Before your first consultation with a bariatric surgeon, please review our frequently asked questions. We provide you with answers about the types of bariatric surgery, dietary guidelines, recovery and more.

Why should I come to Ascension Saint Agnes for my weight-loss surgery?

Dr. Andrew Averbach and Dr. Isam Hamdallah are highly experienced bariatric surgeons at Ascension Saint Agnes. Together, our care teams have helped over 10,000 patients change their lives over the past 20 years--helping patients to lose more than 400,000 pounds.

Do I qualify for bariatric surgery?

If you are morbidly obese, the following characteristics may qualify you for weight-loss surgery:

  • Body mass index (BMI) of 40 or over
  • BMI of 35-40 accompanied by a life-threatening medical condition such as type II diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, and severe sleep apnea
  • Inability to lose weight after multiple attempts with diet, exercise, medication, hypnosis, therapy or a combination of methods.

Bariatric surgery is not a guarantee to produce and maintain long-term weight loss. It’s only the beginning of a lifelong commitment to healthy living. Before your operation, you will begin the process of making lifestyle and behavior changes to increase your chances of lasting weight loss and good health.

Why do you require a psychological evaluation before surgery?

Psychological evaluations are a recommendation of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, as well as most insurance companies. This helps us to evaluate your emotional health and preparedness for surgery. At Ascension Saint Agnes, we do not operate on patients who have not filled this requirement.

Why am I required to see a nutritionist before surgery?

We require all patients to see one of our bariatric dietitians and attend nutrition classes. Your diet will change dramatically after surgery, and your dietitian will give you the information and tools to help make your surgery successful.

How long do I have to stay in the hospital?

Your length of stay is determined by how well you progress after surgery. Sleeve and bypass patients may stay up to two nights.

How often do I need to see a doctor after my surgery?

Surgeons provide follow-up care for surgical weight-loss procedures. After surgery, we monitor your progress and track your goals. After your weight-loss goals are met, we see you once per year for the rest of your life.

Does Medicare cover bariatric surgery?

Yes, Medicare covers gastric bypass as the procedures are performed in a Bariatric Center of Excellence, such as Ascension Saint Agnes. Medicare does require patients to complete a program of diet and exercise prior to giving authorization. Information on these requirements can be provided by your surgeon’s office. (Please note that the sleeve procedure is not covered by Medicare).
