Our care team is here to help. We emphasize good patient education, so patients and their caregivers can manage daily wound care needs at home with regular, in-office, personalized treatments to improve healing at our Wound Healing Center.
Advanced wound healing with hyperbaric oxygen therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an innovative and effective approach to healing for certain kinds of wounds including slow-to-heal diabetic foot wounds, delayed-radiation injuries, and other conditions. Patients relax inside a transparent, oxygen-rich chamber for around two hours a day, allowing increased amounts of pure oxygen into the lungs and blood stream. The oxygen-enriched blood can then target problem areas for faster, more efficient healing. The hyperbaric chamber is a painless environment, similar to riding in an airplane. Ascension St Vincent's hyperbaric oxygen therapy program usually requires 20 to 30 sessions. Chamber interiors are comfortable and designed so patients listen to music, watch movies, or nap. Before the first treatment, a specially trained nurse teaches patients a few simple techniques to avoid potential ear discomfort due to the pressurized environment. The nurse remains present for the full duration of each session and uses a two-way intercom to allow for easy communication during the session.
