Your health insurance paves the way for your weight-loss journey. Bariatric surgery is an elective procedure, so it is important you understand what is and is not covered by your insurance plan. Our insurance coordinator can help explain your pre-approval requirements and submit you for coverage. Most insurance plans require you to participate in a weight-loss trial under a doctor’s supervision. They may also request documents that show that your weight has been a long-term health issue.
Here are steps you can take to get coverage for your weight-loss surgery:
- Read and understand your insurance company’s "certificate of coverage." If you don't have one, ask for a copy. Insurance companies are legally required to provide you with one.
- Seek the support of your primary care doctor.
- Before meeting with a bariatric surgeon, we would ask that you bring your medical records in, including your dieting history.
- Document every doctor’s visit related to obesity-related issues and supervised weight-loss programs.
- Document other weight-loss attempts made through diet centers and fitness club memberships. Keep good records, even receipts.
If your bariatric doctor and surgeon recommend weight-loss surgery, they will prepare a letter to obtain pre-authorization from your insurance company. This letter must establish the "medical necessity" of bariatric surgery.
