When you're taking a blood thinner such as Coumadin (warfarin), it's important to take the correct dosage. There are many things that can affect how blood thinners work in your body. That's why we take the time to get to know you and your health history. At your first appointment, we will talk with you about:

- Your health and medical history
During your appointment, you will also have a quick finger prick. A few drops of blood will be tested to see how quickly your blood clots. This test, called an international normalized ratio (INR), helps your doctor create a care plan and dosage recommendation that is personalized to you.
Helping you manage your blood thinning medication
When you first start taking an anticoagulation, your dosage may change several times as your body adjusts to the medication. This means you may have more frequent appointments during the first few weeks of taking the medication. When you meet with your doctor, you will have a finger pricked to test your blood.
