CALL - 773-665-9840

Choosing to get bariatric surgery is an important decision. You should know what to expect and how to prepare for your weight-loss journey. Before your first consultation with a bariatric surgeon, please review our frequently asked questions. We provide you with answers about the types of bariatric surgery, dietary guidelines, recovery and more.

Is bariatric surgery covered by insurance?

Most health insurance plans cover weight-loss surgery, including Medicare. If your health insurance plan doesn't cover weight-loss surgery, we offer affordable self-pay options. Call us at 800-433-3130 and we will help you understand your benefit coverage.

How do I choose the right bariatric procedure?

Start by watching our online seminar or attend our in-person weight-loss seminar. Both sessions explain the risks and benefits of bariatric surgery. Next, talk to your doctor about your thoughts and preferences at your surgical consultation.

How soon can I have bariatric surgery?

Your timeline for surgery is determined by your insurance company's requirements and your preoperative testing. From the time you meet your surgeon to actually getting the surgery, typically takes 2–8 months.

Is bariatric surgery safe?

There are risks with any type of surgery. Your surgeon will talk with you about risk factors during your consultation.

Will I have loose skin after surgery?

Factors such as age, amount of weight loss, smoking history, sun damage and genetics influence how much excess skin you will have after surgery. The only proven approach to get rid of sagging skin is plastic surgery. This is costly and often not covered by insurance. If you want your loose skin removed, or help coping with negative thinking about your body, the team at Ascension Illinois can connect you to additional resources.

How soon can I get pregnant after surgery?

We recommend waiting at least two years or until your weight has stabilized to become pregnant. Please talk with your surgeon and OB-GYN for guidance.

What if I need to lose weight, but don't qualify for bariatric surgery?

Many people want to lose weight but don't know where to start. At Ascension Illinois , we personalize a program to your needs. Our team includes doctors and nurses who specialize in weight management. We help you with nutritional information, making behavioral changes and physical activity.
