Minimally-invasive techniques to help your recovery

OB-GYNs at Ascension Medical Group Illinois Women's Health have the expertise to perform many types of gynecologic surgery and specialty care procedures, including colposcopy, hysteroscopy and loop electrosurgical excision (LEEP). When possible, your surgeon may use minimally-invasive techniques and robotic surgery such as da Vinci™ Robotic Assisted Surgery. When compared to traditional surgery, minimally invasive techniques may lead to smaller incisions, less pain, a lower risk of complications and help shorten your recovery. Minimally-invasive procedures include:

  • Endometrial Ablation: an alternative to hysterectomy for women with uterine fibroids or excessive menstrual periods
  • Laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH): removal of uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries through the vagina
  • Laparoscopic treatment for ectopic pregnancy
  • Surgical treatment of pelvic pain and infertility

Surgery for pelvic floor disorders

  • Anterior colporrhaphy for cystocele: corrects descent of front vaginal wall and the bulging bladder
  • Posterior colporrhaphy for rectocele: corrects descent of back vaginal wall and the bulging rectum
  • Sacrospinous suspension for uterine or vaginal prolapse: helps treat symptomatic descent of the vagina or uterus.
  • Sling for stress urinary incontinence: mesh sling supports the urethra and helps prevent leakage of urine with coughing, sneezing or other daily activities.

Advanced diagnostic testing for pelvic health

  • Cystometrogram: measures how much pressure the bladder can hold before needing to empty
  • Electromyography: measures muscles in and around the sphincter for nerve or muscle damage
  • Uroflowmetry: measures speed and volume of urine for weakened bladder muscle or obstructed flow

Other tests such as measuring residual urine volume may be performed to help your doctor diagnose your urinary condition. Once a diagnosis is made, we provide a personalized care plan that's right for you.
