Advanced care for speech and swallowing disorders
Your speech language pathologist provides personalized speech and language therapies to help support your recovery. After many types of surgery or injuries, the neck muscles and vocal cords can be swollen, and may affect how well you swallow or speak. Some neuromuscular conditions can cause communication or swallowing problems. Our experienced speech language therapists have additional training to treat many conditions, such as:
- Head and neck cancer
- Multiple sclerosis
- Parkinson’s disease
- Swallowing disorders
- Stroke care
- Traumatic brain injury
Speech therapy available in different settings
At Ascension St. Vincent’s Clay County, we provide speech therapy in the hospital, at outpatient clinics, and at stand-alone inpatient rehabilitation facilities. Our goal is to help you or your child get back to communicating with greater ease and eating the foods they enjoy.
Multispecialty rehabilitation services
Speech therapy is one type of rehabilitation service. Along the way, your care may require other rehabilitation services –pediatric therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy or other specialists – you do not have to navigate your care alone. Your care team will help you schedule appointments, connect with other services, and answer your questions. From your first therapy appointment and throughout your ongoing care, your doctor will stay informed about your progress.
A doctor’s prescription is usually needed before scheduling your initial speech therapy evaluation. Some states have direct access (self-referral) to speech therapy services, but some insurances may not allow direct access, please check with your insurance provider to confirm coverage. Many clinics offer cash services, so check with your speech therapy clinic if interested.
