Ascension Via Christi creates virtual support group for new moms

Ascension Via Christi has launched a post-delivery virtual support group for women who are at home with a new baby and could use some tips or pointers.

While created with moms who participated in the NewLife Center's childbirth education classes or who delivered at Ascension Via Christi St. Joseph in mind, it is open to other women who need support.

"Many new mothers are concerned about getting out with their babies, which doesn't give them the opportunity to connect with other mothers or get the adult interaction they need," says Toni Howard, RN, who leads Childbirth Education for the St. Joseph NewLife Center. "That's been particularly true during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This group will provide them with a safe opportunity to connect with others about the challenges they are experiencing and to do so in a group moderated by a registered nurse who can ensure that the advice they receive is medically supported," Howard says.

The group will discuss adapting to motherhood and its challenges, common new parent issues, overcoming baby stressors at home and other timely topics. Mom-to-mom support and interaction will be encouraged and links to educational resources provided.

The first virtual meeting will be from 4 - 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 2, and there is no cost to take part. To register, click here.

Additional support is also available through Ascension Via Christi's new parent education and breastfeeding classes and support group, all available at no cost to participants thanks to a grant from Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. To find out more, go to viachristibaby.com.
