Ascension sites of care in Illinois are proud of the service the volunteer community provides for our healthcare ministry. Volunteers are vital in helping to create a warm and friendly environment, and are  present in many departments throughout our hospital.

Ascension Alexian Brothers Rehabilitation Hospital volunteers donate their time and energy in an effort to make a patient's stay as comfortable as possible. Our volunteers perform duties that lighten the load of our staff, services for patient comfort. Thank you for your interest in volunteering. There isn’t a gift more generous, more compassionate or more appreciated than giving your time.

Volunteer requirements

With their contagious smiles, comforting presence and huge hearts – our volunteers make Ascension Alexian Brothers Rehabilitation Hospital in Illinois feel like home. Due to the nature of our work there are a number of requirements that all Ascension volunteers must meet. We accept adults age 18 and up. Teenagers must be at least 16 years old at time of application. First you will need to complete a volunteer application and attend an interview session. Next you will undergo a health screening for measles, mumps and rubella and T-spot blood test to confirm negative tuberculosis status, TDAP vaccine administered upon hire or proof of vaccination. All volunteers must be fully vaccinated against COVID - 19. Volunteers are also required to complete a criminal background check and orientation paperwork. Complete onsite training in assigned department upon beginning your assignment, (mandatory training sessions will also be scheduled annually for all volunteers.) Uniforms and ID badge are required any time you are volunteering. To maintain active status, volunteers are expected to commit to a minimum of four hours of service each week in a designated department. These requirements ensure that volunteers are well-prepared and dedicated to supporting the mission of Ascension Alexian Brothers Rehabilitation Hospital. Performance Expectations

Volunteers must be able and willing to dedicate four hours of service for one day each week. Daily shifts are typically: 8 a.m. – 12 p.m., 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. or 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. (times may vary depending on the department's needs).

  • Must accrue a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer time before being eligible to request written proof of volunteering for any reason, including but not limited to court ordered service and school program requirements.

Volunteer Benefits

Active volunteers at Ascension Alexian Brothers Rehabilitation Hospital enjoy a wide range of wonderful benefits. Each volunteer receives a $5 meal voucher that can be redeemed at the cafeteria. Additionally, volunteers are invited to attend special luncheons and educational opportunities.
