Volunteer at Ascension Sacred Heart
The volunteer spirit has supported and sustained Sacred Heart Health System since the Daughters of Charity arrived and founded Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola in 1915. Since then, many dedicated volunteers have given thousands of hours of service to the hospital and its patients.
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Ascension Sacred Heart Pensacola!
It takes caring individuals like YOU to meet the growing healthcare needs of our community!

Career shadowing program
Thank you for your interest in Ascension Sacred Heart's career shadowing and observation program. The goal of the program is to provide an observation experience to aid in your exploration of medical careers. Your experience will be limited to observation of the day-to-day work of professionals in the healthcare field. Participants are not permitted to take part in hands-on delivery of patient care.
Eligibility:
Students 18 years of age and older who are undergraduates or seeking enrollment in a college or university with an interest in a possible healthcare career path.
Shadowing/Observation Time:
The career shadowing and observation experience is limited to one week or a maximum of 40 hours. Additional experience and exposure to the healthcare environment can be obtained through volunteer services.
Application for Participation in the Program:
- Prior to beginning the application process, the applicant must have a sponsor (current associate or doctor) who has already agreed to allow the applicant to shadow them. Due to the large volume of requests, the Volunteer Office does not offer assistance in obtaining approval from a sponsor.
- Applicants will need to submit a completed application for consideration. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
- Upon application submission, a criminal background check will be conducted and the department manager will be contacted to ensure the request can be accommodated.
- Following departmental approvals, the applicant will be contacted and given further instructions regarding onboarding requirements, which include patient confidentiality education and a health screening clearance.
- For the safety of our patients and to meet recommended infectious disease guidelines, all observation students will be required to provide documentation of a two-step PPD/Tuberculosis Skin Test within the past 12 months, as well as immunization records showing up-to-date MMR, Tdap, and Chickenpox/Varicella.
- Expenses associated with these health screening requirements are the responsibility of the applicant.
We look forward to helping you explore a healthcare career and hope your experience will be rewarding.
