Sleep disorders can affect your health
Sleep disorders can affect your physical and emotional health. Our pulmonologists and sleep medicine specialists provide diagnostic sleep studies at locations throughout Northeast Florida:
Diagnostic sleep tests help improve treatment
During your first appointment, your sleep medicine doctor provides a thorough evaluation and determines if a sleep study is right for you. Sleep studies help our care team understand how your breathing, napping and nightly sleep routine may be affecting your heart, lungs and brain.
We offer different types of sleep tests, including:
Overnight sleep study (polysomnogram): During this sleep study, you will stay overnight in our sleep lab while we monitor you. This test is used to diagnose sleep disorders, or to determine the effectiveness of a treatment.
Maintenance of wakefulness test: This is a daytime test that monitors your breathing, brain activity and wakefulness during four separate 40-minute sessions.
Multiple sleep latency test: This is a daytime sleepiness test that monitors you during five separate napping sessions. The test evaluates how quickly you fall asleep and your stages of sleep.
Imaging and laboratory tests: Specific medical imaging studies or blood tests may be recommended based on your health concerns.
At-home sleep study: We offer in-home sleep studies. Our care team meets with you and provides instructions for the bedside setup. After you complete the sleep study, return the device to the office.
Sleep disorder treatments
For sleep disorders that affect your breathing, a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine may be part of your care plan. At Ascension St. Vincent’s, our care team provides full-service CPAP and bi-level positive airway pressure (BiPAP) equipment, supplies and masks. Our respiratory care team works closely with your sleep medicine doctor to monitor the effectiveness of your CPAP or BiPAP therapy and to manage your symptoms.
INSPIRE® therapy for sleep apnea
If CPAP is not tolerable or is no longer working for you and you are over the age of 22, you may qualify for INSPIRE® therapy. With this therapy, an implanted device monitors your breathing and delivers mild stimulation to the specific airway muscles that keep your airway open while you sleep. Ask your doctor if INSPIRE® therapy is right for you. Ascension St. Vincent's was the first healthcare system in Northeast Florida to perform INSPIRE® therapy.
Other adult sleep disorder treatments may include:
- Cognitive behavior therapy
- Lifestyle and dietary changes
- Medication management
- Relaxation techniques
