Tod C. Huntley, MD, FACS, recognized annually by Indianapolis Monthly magazine as one of Indianapolis' Top Docs, treats the full range of general otolaryngology problems for adults and children. He was offered the chance to join the practice in 1991 while completing his fellowship in head and neck surgery under Ronald Hamaker, MD. , the group's founder. Dr. Huntley's fellowship included subspecialty training in the treatment of cancers of the head, neck, mouth, throat, and sinuses, as well as microvascular free flap reconstruction of cancer defects. He has been an integral part of CENTA's head and neck cancer program since then, while simultaneously expanding his expertise in numerous other arenas. It was under Dr. Huntley’s direction that CENTA has built national a national reputation in such fields as obstructive sleep apnea treatment and robotic surgery. Huntley has established a national reputation in the surgical treatment of snoring and obstructive sleep apnea. He has had extensive post-fellowship training in the latest soft tissue and maxillofacial OSA surgical techniques from some of the world's best experts, starting with post-fellowship training at the Stanford University Sleep Disorders Center in 1991. Since that time, he has been active in clinical research, teaching, publishing, and as a consultant with industry. Dr. Huntley has authored book chapters and journal articles on various sleep apnea surgical topics, has presented at numerous national and international meetings, and has been an invited guest lecturer throughout the US and in North and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. He has been on the Sleep Disorders Committee of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery and is a founding member of the International Society of Sleep Surgeons. He is co-director of the world’s foremost instructional course for sleep surgeons, held annually at St. Louis University. Dr. Huntley has been a principal investigator in the first clinical and FDA trials of a number of surgical treatments of snoring and sleep apnea, including: Radiofrequency volumetric reduction (Somnoplasty®) of the soft tissues of the upper airway, including the tongue base Pillar implants Tongue base suspension techniques Implantable hypoglossal nerve stimulation Dr. Huntley is also one of the region’s premier thyroid and parathyroid surgeons, and he emphasizes minimally-invasive techniques when appropriate. He lectures frequently on thyroid disorders, was the first surgeon in the state of Indiana to perform minimally invasive thyroidectomy for thyroid tumors, and was one of the first in the country to be trained in robotic-assisted thyroid surgery. He was one of only a few surgeons in Indiana to be a member of the American Thyroid Association, the world's premier organization dedicated to the study and treatment of thyroid disorders. Dr. Huntley is proficient in ultrasound examination of the thyroid and parathyroid and offers ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration of thyroid masses. Dr. Huntley also specializes in minimally invasive surgical techniques in the head and neck, which includes involves transoral robotic surgery (TORS), transoral laser microsurgery (TLM) for cancers of the mouth and throat, and endoscopic approaches to the skull base. He was one of the first dozen physicians in the U.S. trained in TORS surgery after it was FDA approved in January of 2010 and has been a principal investigator for clinical studies researching the role of TORS in the treatment of cancer and for obstructive sleep apnea. Dr. Huntley is an instructor to other U.S. surgeons on TORS surgery and has proctored more surgeons around the U.S. for their first TORS cases than any other instructor.
