Delivering high-quality medical images

At Ascension Wisconsin, we make getting X-rays convenient for your family. Our radiology care team is dedicated to making your experience as comfortable as possible. We explain what to expect and answer your questions before your procedure. Let our care team know if you or your child has specific needs or concerns, so we can make sure they are comfortable during their X-ray.

What to expect during your X-ray

An X-ray is a quick test that takes pictures of the inside of your body, such as your bones, organs and internal tissues. They can be used to diagnose breaks, fractures, infections, tumors, cancers, and many other health conditions. A doctor’s referral is needed for X-rays. Before we begin the X-ray, we explain the procedure to you so you know what to expect the entire time. It may be helpful to wear comfortable clothing that can be moved to expose the area that needs to be examined. Depending on which area is being X-rayed, you may be asked to wear a gown. You’ll also be asked to remove any jewelry or eyeglasses so they don’t show up on the X-ray.

During the procedure, your technologist will position your body to get images of the area being examined. Pillows may be used to help you stay comfortable while holding a position for the X-ray. The procedure usually only lasts a few minutes, but can take longer depending on the area being examined and the type of X-ray used.

After the procedure, your radiologists will read and interpret your results, and send them to your doctor. Getting a complete picture of your health helps your doctor make an accurate diagnosis and create a care plan that’s right for you.
