Healthy weight-loss options

Weight management is about much more than just calorie-counting and exercise. Weight loss can help improve your health by reducing your risk for chronic disease, including heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, joint pain, and more. At your first appointment, you’ll meet with a member of our care team. You may be required to take laboratory tests as part of your health evaluation. During this time, we’ll discuss your weight-loss options, which may include:

  • Behavior and stress management
  • Medication
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Physical activity

After your first visit, we work with you to build a personalized weight management strategy. We may also schedule appointments with other specialists, if needed. Your multispecialty care team is here to help you reach your weight-loss goals:

  • Behavioral therapist
  • Dietitian
  • Doctor or nurse practitioner
  • Physical therapist

How our weight-loss program works

At Ascension Illinois, our weight-loss program has three phases:

Health assessment: During your initial consultation, a weight-loss specialist will perform a physical exam and review your medical history. You will also talk to a registered dietitian (RD) about your doctor’s recommendations to help create a personalized care plan that’s right for you.

Active weight loss: During the active weight loss phase, you will follow a medically-guided nutrition plan. Each plan may include any or all of the following:

  • End-to-end medical supervision by a care team member who specializes in weight loss
  • Medications approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA)
  • Nutritional counseling and a low-carbohydrate meal plan personalized to you by an RD
  • Meal replacements to help reduce your caloric intake and manage your diet
  • Lifestyle classes where RDs, behavioral counselors and exercise specialists provide information to help you prepare for and manage long-term success

Long-term weight management: At Ascension Illinois, our goal is to continue working with you and supporting you throughout your lifetime. For long-term weight loss, we provide ongoing appointments with our specialists to help monitor your weight and support groups to manage your mental and emotional health.
