If your child needs care for an eye injury or condition, our experienced pediatric eye doctors at Ascension sites of care provide advanced tests and treatments for eye disorders in children. We listen to understand you and your child. Then, we work with you to deliver a personalized care plan that’s right for your child.

Symptoms of childhood eye disorders

By age seven, most children’s eyes are fully mature. Our eye doctors specialize in preventive care to help detect eye conditions as early as possible. Parents are often the first to notice something is wrong. Does your child’s eye look different? Is your child’s hand and eye coordination off? Do visual cues go unnoticed? Talk with your child’s doctor about any new symptoms or concerns.

We deliver care for children and teens with eye conditions, including:

  • Blindness or low vision
  • Clogged tear ducts and excessive tearing
  • Cloudy eyes
  • Double vision and eye movement disorders
  • Drooping eyelid
  • Eye infection, such as pink eye
  • Genetic conditions, such as poor color vision
  • Lazy eye
  • Refractive vision problems (astigmatism, farsightedness and nearsightedness)
  • Retinopathy of prematurity (blinding retina conditions)
  • Stye (red, sore lump on the eyelid)
  • Tumors in the eye

Vision tests and treatments for children

Experienced care teams provide high-quality diagnostic eye and vision tests and procedures. During a vision test, our pediatric ophthalmology care team helps your child feel comfortable by explaining the test and using equipment specifically designed for infants, children and teens. A child’s eye health can be related to other health conditions, such as autoimmune disease, a developmental abnormality or neurological condition. So, your child’s doctor will connect your family to other specialists if needed.

Our ophthalmologists are also trained eye surgeons and provide surgical care for eye injuries and other emergencies.

If your child experiences a life-threatening emergency, go directly to the nearest ER or call 911.

Managing progressive vision changes

Your child’s vision changes as your child grows. For children affected by an eye disorder, we offer advanced care to help manage progressive changes with corrective glasses and other treatments.
