Choose an experienced surgeon in Jacksonville
At Ascension St. Vincent’s hospitals in Jacksonville, Florida, our surgeons have the expertise to perform bloodless surgery. During inpatient and outpatient surgery, we provide the option to not have a blood transfusion or use blood products.
What is a bloodless surgery procedure?
Your surgeon will explain if using bloodless medicine and surgical techniques are appropriate for you and your condition.
One technique is called hemodilution, a technique to reduce the amount of blood loss during surgery by replacing it with clear, intravenous solutions.
Another bloodless surgical technique is the cell-salvage intraoperative system. During surgery, your blood from the surgical field is collected, filtered, washed and transfused back to you.

Preoperative evaluation for bloodless surgery
During your surgical consultation, let us know if you are interested in bloodless surgery. At your preoperative evaluation, we will:
- Review your medical chart
- Ask questions about any history of a bleeding disorder
- Review previous surgeries and surgical complications
- Discuss your current medications and herbal supplements
- Schedule laboratory testing to analyze your blood count, platelet count and coagulation profile
Prior to scheduling surgery, your general surgeon may refer you to a hematologist if you need to improve your blood counts, coagulation profile, or preoperative anemia. In some cases, therapeutics such as recombinant erythropoietin, iron therapy, vitamin B12 and folate are prescribed.
Before your inpatient or outpatient surgery, we’ll ask you to confirm if you still want a bloodless surgery or accept blood and blood products as part of your care. We will also request an updated advance directive as part of your medical record.
