Neurodevelopmental care for children with congenital heart disease
Your child’s specialist starts by listening to you, to better understand your concerns and your child’s needs. And your child’s specialist may recommend advanced imaging, technology and neuropsychological testing to help diagnose your child’s condition. We take the time to explain your child’s condition and treatment options. Then, we work with you to create an individualized care plan for your child.
Developmental delays include:
- Attention deficit disorder (ADD)
- Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Impaired visual-spatial and visual-motor skills
- Learning delays
- Mild cognitive impairment
- Oral-motor discoordination
- Speech and language delays
- Other neurodevelopmental delays
Specialized cardiac neurodevelopmental care
Doctors and care teams at Dell Children’s provide specialized care for children with congenital heart disease who have surgery when they are infants. Our care team helps monitor the development of these children because they are also at higher risk for neurodevelopmental disabilities than other children. So, over time, our multispeciality care teams detect, diagnose and treat developmental delays with the goal of improving each child’s development.
Comprehensive care for developmental delays
At Dell Children’s, your child will benefit from a multispecialty team — pediatric neurologists, cardiologists, speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, pharmacists, social workers, child life specialists and more — all dedicated to their care.
For children receiving care in the hospital, our care team meets weekly to review their progress and set goals for the next week. If your child needs more advanced care, we connect you with the right pediatric specialists at Dell Children’s.
A family-centered approach to your child’s care
Your involvement in your child’s care makes a difference. Parents and caregivers are often encouraged to keep a record of your own observations of your child. We review your records to help us better understand your child’s emotional and physical health while at home and school. By working with you, we create a treatment plan that’s right for your child and family.
Get a second opinion from a pediatric specialist
Get the confidence and peace of mind that your child’s doctor and care plan are right for your child and family. It's easy to get a second opinion at Dell Children’s Medical Center at Ascension Seton. We can review your child’s medical records and healthcare history to answer your questions and discuss options. Talk with one of our pediatric specialists about a personalized care plan.
When your child has congenital heart disease or is facing a new diagnosis, there’s a lot to think about. We can discuss both therapeutic and surgical treatment plans. Our team of highly experienced pediatric specialists can provide you with a second opinion based on experience and as part of an integrated national network of care.
Before your child’s appointment, check with your insurance company to find out if a second opinion is covered. We can request your child’s medical records from their doctor on your behalf so that they can be shared with your care team before your arrival.
