Family-centered childbirth classes
Ascension Saint Thomas Women's Care provides a variety of childbirth preparation classes designed for all members of the family, including siblings.
Our Family Learning Centers provide a wide variety of classes for new and expectant parents, siblings, grandparents, and adoptive parents. We encourage family involvement during your pregnancy and following the birth of your baby.
Childbirth Education Weekend Classes
Childbirth education weekend classes are provided as a two-day program. Our instructors prepare you and your support person for childbirth. Topics include: breathing, relaxation, timing contractions, when to call the doctor, how to be a good support person, the labor process, anesthesia, cesarean birth, interventions, postpartum care, and newborn characteristics.
A tour of the OB unit and Baby Basics are included. The total cost for this class is $150.00.
Childbirth Education Weekday Class
This series prepares you and your support person for childbirth. Topics include: the labor process, when to call the doctor, timing contractions, breathing, relaxation, how to be a good support person, medications, anesthesia, cesarean birth, interventions, postpartum care and baby basics. A tour of the OB unit is also included. The total cost for this class is $125.00.
Labor in a Day
One-day class with an accelerated paced learning experience, looking at all the different aspects of labor and delivery. We will cover signs of labor, breathing, relaxation and position changes, anesthesia, reasons for a c-section delivery and postpartum care. There will be a one hour lunch break. Please bring a pillow and wear comfortable clothes. The class does not cover Baby Basics or an OB tour. Feel free to sign up for a hospital tour or the Just About the Baby class if you are interested in learning more about newborn care. The total cost for this class will be $100 for the day.
Series for the couple interested in taking a more natural approach to labor. It does follow the principles of Lamaze teaching. All aspects of birth will be covered including breastfeeding and Baby Basics. No other class is needed. A tour of the OB unit is included. The total cost for this class is $175.00.
Our program prepares you to breastfeed your baby, information on positioning, correct latch, milk production, and coping strategies that will help you to breastfeed successfully. A support person is encouraged to attend this class. The total cost for this class is $40.00.
This class is designed to help parents understand the special nature of a multiple pregnancy with tips on how to survive the first year. A tour of our Beaman Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will also be included. The total cost for this class is $40.00.
Breastfeeding and Baby Basics
The three-hour class is for parents seeking a one-day adventure into the world of breastfeeding and newborn care, including information on positioning, correct latch, milk production, and coping strategies to help you to breastfeed successfully. Baby care basics (bathing, diapering and soothing) will be demonstrated and practice. Support person is encouraged to attend. The total cost for this class is $60.00.
Trained instructors teach you how to come to the aid of a choking or non-breathing infant, child or adult. Please schedule CPR class at least 6 weeks prior to due date. The total cost for this class will be $60.00 per couple.
Just About the Baby
Two-hour class about the latest in newborn care for anyone needing a refresher on how to care for a newborn. We will discuss safe sleep, new guidelines for feedings (breast and bottle), coping mechanisms for the baby and parents, and general infant care and safety. The total cost for this class will be $40.00.
Brothers and Sisters To-Be
This class emphasizes the sibling’s new role as a big brother or sister. For families (children ages 3-10 and parents) expecting a new baby. Our instructors provide tips on how to make this transition easier and a tour of the OB unit will be included. The total cost for this class is $25.00.
The Birthing Center Orientation
For the family desiring to deliver in The Birthing Center, this mandatory two-hour session provides the mother and your support person an overview of our guidelines and a tour of the facility. The total cost for orientation is $40.00.
