What to Expect: Customizing the Birth Experience
Women have a variety of options available to help them with the childbirth experience. Natural techniques available at the Family Birth Place include walking during labor, hydrotherapy, birth balls and breathing techniques. Epidural and medication options are also available. Patients are welcome to bring aromatherapy, massage creams and music that will help them relax and enhance the overall experience.
Our staff practices mother-baby, or couplet, care, which means each family unit gets the same nurse for both mother and baby. We encourage mothers to keep their babies in their rooms at all times to form a stronger bond and relationship. Connecting this way helps you see all of the baby's "firsts" and understand your new baby's personality and needs. Teachable moments include everything from the baby's first bath to the baby's first check-up and what to do when the baby cries.
Specialized Care for Premature Births and High-risk Pregnancy
Most pregnancies and deliveries go as planned, with few complications. Mother and baby typically go home within two to three days, but should the unexpected happen, specialized maternal and newborn care is available from by a group of experienced doctors and nurses. From high-risk pregnancies and complications to experienced care for premature and sick newborns, Sacred Heart Hospital is the regional leader in pregnancy and childbirth care.
Our regional Center for High-Risk Pregnancy includes a series of outpatient offices across Northwest Florida and an inpatient unit at our sister facility, Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola.
Our Pensacola campus is also home to The Studer Family Children's Hospital at Sacred Heart, a 117-bed facility that serves as the only children's hospital in Northwest Florida. The Children's Hospital also offers the region's only Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Through our dedicated Neonatal Critical Care Transport Unit stationed in Miramar Beach, we are able to bring prematurely born and critically ill babies to The Children's Hospital in Pensacola for lifesaving care.
Classes and Tours: We Prepare You
The Family Birth Place offers a variety of childbirth and parenting education classes. We recommend mom-to-be complete childbirth classes between their 28-36th week of pregnancy.
