Genetic Counseling

Providing information about your cancer risk

Early cancer detection starts with understanding your cancer risk

Detroit High Risk Genetic Testing and Counseling

If you are concerned about your risk for developing cancer, the St. John Providence Cancer Genetics Program provides counseling, risk assessment and genetic testing (when appropriate) for people with a personal or family history of cancer. Our goal is to provide you information about your cancer risk, genetic testing options, and early detection and treatment plans. Preventive medical and surgical options are also available for hereditary cancer patients.

A consultation may be valuable if you or a family member have:

  • A personal history of cancer
  • Several relatives diagnosed with cancer
  • One or more relatives who developed cancer before age 50
  • A relative who has had more than one cancer diagnosis
  • A family history of unusual or rare cancer, such as male breast cancer
Hereditary Cancer Syndromes
While most cancers occur by chance, approximately 5 to 10 percent of cancer cases are hereditary and run in families. Hereditary cancer syndromes are associated with diverse types of cancer, including:
  • Breast
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Uterine cancer
  • Skin cancer
  • Prostate cancer
  • Thyroid cancer
  • Pancreatic cancer

The Cancer Genetics Screening Process
The program is designed as a multi-visit clinic and typically involves one to two sessions lasting 45 to 60 minutes. Genetic testing involves examining a patient’s DNA for changes associated with an increased risk of certain cancers. This testing may reveal whether the cancer risk in a family is passed through their genes. The procedure requires a small blood sample.
