Structural Heart and Valve Care in Saginaw
Saginaw Michigan Heart Valve Care
Advanced care for a leaky and narrowed heart valve
At Ascension St. Mary’s in Saginaw, Michigan, we provide diagnostic tests, including imaging to pinpoint a leaky heart valve and a cardiac ultrasound (echo) to check how well your heart functions. Our doctors and care teams listen to understand you and your health concerns. Then, we work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that’s right for you.
Symptoms of structural heart disease
Your heart has four valves that pump blood throughout your body. When a valve, chamber or the wall of the heart is damaged, it's called structural heart disease. Symptoms of structural heart disease may include:
- Chest pains
- Irregular heartbeat
- Shortness of breath
- Swollen ankles and feet
Some adults are born with a heart defect that gets worse with age. Heart damage can be caused by infections, radiation therapy and inflammatory conditions like lupus or rheumatic fever. Our cardiologists monitor risk factors for heart disease, such as high cholesterol and blood pressure, to help prevent heart valve damage.
- Patent Foramen Ovale: A hole between the left and right upper chambers of the heart
- Aortic Stenosis: A narrowing of the aortic valve opening
- Mitral Regurgitation: Leakage of blood backward through the mitral valve
