Specialty care for mitral valve repair
MitraClipâ„¢ Procedure in MichiganFind A Doctor
When your mitral valve is damaged, it can be difficult for blood to flow from one chamber to the other. Symptoms of a leaky heart valve (mitral regurgitation) include palpitations, shortness of breath, coughing, congestion and swelling of your legs and feet. If a leaky heart valve is left untreated, your condition may worsen and lead to heart failure. At Ascension hospitals in Michigan, our heart doctors specialize in mitral valve repair. Our doctors listen to understand you and your health concerns. Then, we work together to deliver heart care that’s right for you.
Minimally invasive heart procedure
MitraClip™ is a minimally invasive procedure that helps to repair your mitral valve. Starting with a vein in your leg, your doctor guides a thin tube up through your heart. Then, a small clip is attached to your mitral valve to help it close. This procedure helps to restore normal blood flow inside and outside of your heart.
Preparing for MitraClip™ surgery
Our specially-trained heart care team will evaluate you to see if MitraClip™ is right for you. During the evaluation, your doctor will review your medical history and perform any needed tests. Key factors, such as age, strength and the condition of your heart, may affect your ability to have surgery. Your doctor may decide MitraClip™ is not right for you if:
- You can not tolerate blood thinning medications
- You have an active infection or inflammation of the mitral valve
- You have mitral valve disease as a result of rheumatic fever
- You have a blood clot in your heart or in the vessels that carry blood from the lower body to the heart
Talk to your doctor to find out if MitraClip™ is an option for you.
