Our Ascension cardiologist to diagnose and treat all types of heart diseases, including atrial fibrillation and advanced heart failure. If you are at risk for heart attack or stroke, see our cardiologists about preventive screening tests and how to control high blood pressure and bad cholesterol. If there is the coronary artery or heart damage, our doctors work closely with the cardiothoracic surgeons and interventional cardiologists who perform minimally invasive procedures and open-heart surgery. By repairing heart valve damage, opening blockages, and restoring normal heart rhythm, many heart patients are leading active, healthy lifestyles. When circulatory problems put your risk for stroke or other peripheral artery diseases, see our vascular surgeons for innovative intervention to restore blood flow.

Non-invasive Diagnostic Heart Testing

The cardiologists and radiologists at Ascension St. John Hospital’s Non-Invasive Lab use the latest imaging technologies to pinpoint heart problems. With our streamlined patient scheduling system, we can perform the test, generate the report and keep your care plan moving ahead on time. The tests we perform include:

  • Coronary CT Angiography
  • Heart Scan (Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring)
  • Electrocardiography (EKG)
  • Echocardiography—including Two-Dimensional Echo, Transesophageal Echo (TEE) and Doppler Studies
  • Nuclear Cardiology Imaging
  • Carotid Doppler and Imaging Studies
  • Stress Testing—including Exercise and Pharmacological Stress Echo with or without Nuclear Imaging
  • Holter and Event Monitoring

Heart Failure Therapy --Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP)

A daily outpatient therapy provides long-term symptom management in patients with angina (chest pain) and congestive heart failure. Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) therapy is especially helpful for patients who cannot tolerate certain types of heart medications. During each therapy session, oversized diastolic blood pressure cuffs apply compression to the legs to help regulate circulation throughout the body.

Minimally Invasive Heart and Vascular Procedures

Our interventional cardiologists perform many types of heart and vascular procedures in the catheterization lab. This cardiac cath lab is the only one in the area exclusively supported by cardiac-trained registered nurses. As a teaching center for the latest interventional techniques, we attract doctors worldwide and continue to pioneer safer minimally invasive procedures on coronary, peripheral and carotid arteries. Our patients also benefit from the medical research we lead in device and pharmacologic research to treat vascular diseases, ease the pain, reduce recovery time, and improve patient outcomes. Procedures include:

  • Percutaneous Coronary Interventions
  • Intracoronary Stenting including drug-coated stenting; Rheolytic Thrombectomy
  • Mechanical Rotational Atherectomy (MRA); Directional Coronary Atherectomy (DCA); Cutting Balloon; Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS)
  • Percutaneous Peripheral Procedures – including Carotid Stenting
  • Intra Aortic Balloon Pump Therapy (IABP)
  • Endomyocardial Biopsy
  • Valvuloplasty
  • Coronary Laser Therapy
  • Carotid Stenting
  • Peripheral Laser Therapy specializing in limb salvage

Heart Rhythm Center – Cardiac Electrophysiology

Atrial fibrillation (Afib) causes an irregular heartbeat and is a risk factor for stroke.  Our electrophysiologists specialize in heart rhythm disorders.  Ascension St. John Hospital is a pioneer in new Afib treatments for abnormal heart rhythm and heart failure. Our doctors use the latest techniques to treat all types of arrhythmias:

  • Atrial fibrillation procedures
  • Automatic Cardiac Defibrillators (ICD) implantation
  • Cardiac resynchronization with biventricular pacing devices
  • Cardioversion
  • Catheter Ablations of Arrhythmias
  • Electrophysiology and Tilt Table Testing
  • Lead extraction
  • Left atrial appendage occlusion
  • Non-invasive program stimulation (NIPS)
  • Pacemaker implantation
  • 3-D mapping

Cardiovascular Surgery

Heart and vascular surgery at Ascension St. John Hospital has national recognition. The cardiothoracic surgeons trained in robotic heart bypass and valve surgery are part of national initiatives to develop surgical techniques to improve patient outcomes and shorten the recovery process. The Gretchen C. Valade Cardiovascular Hybrid Laboratory and Minimally Invasive Structural Heart Program, the first in Michigan, benefits patients by having advanced heart imaging and robot-assisted surgical systems in one place.
