The care teams at Ascension Saint Agnes provide diagnostic cancer care screening tests, including the low-dose CT lung scan. Our Lung Cancer Screening Program works to prevent lung cancer and improve the detection of early stage disease and other lung diseases:

  • Benign lung nodules
  • Lung cancer
  • Lung fibrosis
  • COPD
  • Other breathing disorders

The Ascension Saint Agnes team approach helps you understand your lung health. Our lung specialists and diagnostic radiologists have extensive experience performing and analyzing CT screens to detect the presence of lung disease. Saint Agnes Hospital was a research participant in the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (I-ELCAP) involving over 50,000 participants, worldwide. The groundbreaking study released by the National Cancer Institute reported that CT screening for lung cancer can have a significant impact on a patient's survival.

To learn more, talk to our Lung Cancer Screening Program nurse coordinator. This screening test is designed for individuals who may be at high risk for developing cancer, including:

  • Adults, age 55-74
  • Smoked a pack a day for 30 years or more or the equivalent
  • A current smoker or former smoker who has quit within the past 15 years

Lung screenings are covered by Medicare, Medicaid and most private health insurance plans. Please check your insurance benefits to determine coverage. When insurance is not applicable, the out-of-pocket cost for the low-dose CT lung screening is $75.

Why should I get a lung screening?

When lung cancer is detected early at Stage 1, the chance for survival after five years is 92 percent. If it is diagnosed later as a Stage 4 lung cancer, the survival rate drops to 15 percent. The results from the I-ELCAP study at Saint Agnes and other participating research centers demonstrated that annual CT screening increases the rate of detection of Stage 1 lung cancer to 80 percent.

Seton Imaging, conveniently located on the Ascension Saint Agnes campus provides this lung screening test. Our care team supports you throughout the process by answering your questions and coordinating follow-up care. Learn more about low-dose CT lung screening

A noninvasive CT scan generates detailed images using rotating x-rays to detect the presence of lung nodules or other abnormalities. Our American College of Radiology certified radiologists carefully review the images and prepare a report for your doctor. While some lung nodules may be benign, they can be indicators of lung disease or cancer. Our program coordinator will contact you about follow-up care.
