Early signs of cancer in women
Screenings can help find breast, cervical, and other cancers early, when treatment may work best. Early signs of of a gynecological cancer may include:
- Abdominal distention, gas or fluid collecting in the abdomen
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding
- Abnormal weight loss
- Breast swelling, lumps, and abnormal nipple discharge
- Lumps in the neck, trouble swallowing, persistent hoarseness
- Pain in pelvic area
- Tiredness and increased fatigue

Breast surgeons and care teams at Ascension Saint Agnes Breast Center offer a range of breast health services, including:
- Breast screening and diagnostic 3D mammograms
- Breast ultrasound and breast MRI
- Consultations with a breast surgeon
Gynecology and UroGYN cancer services
Let your OB-GYN or gynecologist know if you have a family member with breast cancer or ovarian cancer. Both are risk factors for developing gynecologic cancer. Our GYN and urogynecology doctors provide tests and pelvic exams to detect gynecologic cancers, including:
- Vulva and vaginal
Specialty care for women
Your Ascension Saint Agnes doctor provides minimally invasive surgery, when possible. Many types of surgical treatments are available, including:
Breast surgery, such as
- Axillary lymph node surgery
- Breast reconstruction after surgery
- Lumpectomy, a type of breast-conserving surgery
- Nipple-sparing surgery
Gynecologic surgery, such as:
- Lymph node dissection
- Pelvic reconstruction after cancer treatment
- Proactively remove ovaries, called prophylactic oophorectomy

We offer a range of services on our campus, with convenient valet parking. Transportation to and from appointments can be arranged for you. Our oncology care teams work together to help make your appointments as easy and coordinated as possible.
Genetic tests and counseling
Our care team provides genetic tests for BRCA and other hereditary genes that may increase your risk for breast or gynecologic cancer. Telehealth genetic testing and counseling is now available. Our genetic nurse coordinator schedules your genetic tests and coordinates a consultation with a telehealth genetic consultant at the Breast Center or from the convenience of your home.
Cancer support programs and services
When you’re going through cancer care, we’re by your side. Your doctors and care team are here to help, listen and offer services that help support your treatment plan. Have a conversation with our patient consult coordinator — ask any question, big or small. And we offer an extended care team for emotional support — chaplain, palliative care specialist and oncology-certified social worker. Our healing garden and chapel are always open for you and your loved ones. Other services include:
- Cancer rehabilitation, including lymphedema and pelvic therapy
- Financial aid counselors
- Oncology-trained pharmacists
- Patient and caregiver support groups
Breast and gynecologic care teams and clinical trials
At Ascension Saint Agnes Hospital Cancer Institute, you have an entire team dedicated to your care. Gynecologists, urogynecologists and breast surgeons meet with our medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, cancer and oncology nurses regularly. We work together to review your care plan and monitor your progress to deliver advanced care for your needs.
