Gallbladder Specialists at Ascension Wisconsin
Hepatopancreatobiliary program offers specialty care for gallbladder cancer
At Ascension Wisconsin, our hepatopancreatobiliary specialists help to diagnose and treat gallbladder diseases, including gallbladder cancer. Our doctors listen to understand you and your health concerns. We provide advanced tests and treatments. Then, we work with you to create a care plan that’s right for you.
We treat many conditions from gallstones and gallbladder attacks to gallbladder cancer. The gallbladder stores bile and when you eat, that bile is released in the small intestine to help break down fat for digestion. If your gallbladder has been removed, the risk of developing bile duct or gallbladder cancer increases. Our care team specializes in conditions that affect your gastrointestinal tract and abdomen. Gallbladder cancer can be aggressive. It may spread to the liver, peritoneum (abdominal wall), surrounding lymph nodes, and the lungs.
Symptoms of gallbladder cancer
Symptoms are not always present in early stage tumors. If you have a history of gallbladder problems, talk to our hepatopancreatobiliary program care team.
Common symptoms of gallbladder cancer include:
- Abdominal pain
- Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes)
- Lumps in abdomen
- Unexplained weight loss
- General discomfort (malaise)
Treatments for gallbladder cancer
Our cancer care team provides a personalized treatment plan for your cancer care. Combination therapies may include surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy to help prevent the recurrence of your cancer.
Surgery - We provide advanced surgical treatments for gallbladder cancer to help prevent the spread of cancer to other abdominal organs. Surgery may include removing the gallbladder, liver tissue, affected bile ducts, and surrounding lymph nodes.
Non-surgical therapies for gallbladder cancer
- Systemic chemotherapy, the standard chemotherapy, for gallbladder cancer includes Gemcitabine® and Cisplatin®. Several other drug combinations can be used when other therapies have not worked. These therapies help control disease both within and outside the liver.
- External beam radiotherapy is precision radiation technology that targets the tumor and helps prevent exposure to healthy tissue.
