Advanced surgical technique used in breast surgery
Breast Cancer Surgery Technology
Dr. Jeffrey Falk, Dr. Cheryl Wesen and Dr. Natalie Rizk, Ascension’s Breast Care Program surgeons, are using new surgical technologies to advance better outcomes for breast cancer patients in southeast Michigan.
The Ascension Michigan Breast Care surgical team is using MarginProbe® to help increase clean margins in patients during their first surgery. They are the first in southeast Michigan to offer this procedure to breast cancer surgical patients and ultimately improving their standard of care.
The technology is designed to analyze tissue and detect bioelectric differences between cancerous and healthy cells. Once detected, a binary result is reported to the surgeon real time to support further removal of additional breast tissue. This technology provides surgeons the opportunity to have a greater chance of getting cleaner margins during the first surgery and keeping patients from having to go back into the operating room for re-excisions in breast-conserving surgery and ultimately reducing the possibilities of complications and better recovery outcomes.
MarginProbe® is a commercial product based on Dune Medical Devices’ proprietary radio frequency spectroscopy technology that received FDA Premarket Approval in 2012. Since then, the device has surpassed use in over 10,000 breast cancer patients.
SAVI SCOUT® Radar Localization
Screening mammography has led to early detection of non-palpable breast lesions. Lumpectomy procedures for these non-palpable lesions traditionally involved a wire localization procedure the day of surgery which resulted in patients experiencing much discomfort and anxiety. The Ascension Michigan Breast Care surgical team has adopted the SAVI SCOUT® wire-free radar localization system. Instead of wires protruding through the breast, a small reflector the size of a grain of rice is placed into the breast prior to the day of surgery. The SAVI SCOUT® system detects the reflector using its unique radar signal. Using SAVI SCOUT®, surgeons can precisely target non-palpable lesions in the breast to pinpoint its location within 1mm, which can mean more successful surgeries, optimized breast conservation strategies, and enhanced outcomes for patients.
Along with the MarginProbe® and SAVI SCOUT® technologies, the surgical team has also been successful in hidden scar and nipple preservation procedures, ultimately providing very personal options for those who are facing breast removal and reconstruction.
