Helping teens and young adults survive cancer
Ascension St. John Hospital Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Oncology Program
At Ascension Michigan, we recognize the challenges faced by adolescents and young adults with cancer. In order to better serve them, the Ascension Michigan Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology program helps navigate the medical and personal challenges of their diagnosis.
Patients under the age of 39 that have been diagnosed with cancer will experience a collaborative approach to their care. Common AYA cancers include: sarcoma, germ cell, thyroid cancers and central nervous system cancers. Our cancer care teams listen to your needs and provide a personalized care plan that you and your family are comfortable and confident in. The AYA program offers various tools and services to better navigate and understand your diagnosis, including:
- Identifying eligibility for clinical trials specifically targeted to this age group
- Providing a collaborative treatment approach with adult and pediatric oncologists as well as other oncology specialties
- Providing psycho-social and emotional supportive care services tailored to younger adults, including:
- Mental health coaching
- Dietary Support
- Sexual health and fertility
- Career counseling
- Physical therapy and fitness
- On-going support and surveillance
- Assisting patient with insurance
- Addressing issues of toxicity and adherence to therapy
- Providing long term follow up (survivor-ship)
