ClearBalance Incident Notice

Maintaining the privacy and security of our patient’s information is of the utmost importance to Ascension Via Christi. On June 21, 2021, we received notice from CSI Financial LLC, (“ClearBalance”) – a third-party partner that provides financing programs to patients – that Ascension Via Christi patient information was impacted as a result of a security incident within ClearBalance email accounts. The incident did not impact Ascension Via Christi systems, databases, or medical records. ClearBalance has no evidence at this time of any fraud or misuse of the data involved.

On April 26, 2021, ClearBalance detected and prevented an attempted unauthorized wire transfer. ClearBalance immediately engaged a forensic investigator to aid in an investigation and contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Their investigation determined that there was unauthorized access to certain ClearBalance email accounts between March 8, 2021 and April 26, 2021. ClearBalance began notifying affected individuals on July 9, 2021.

ClearBalance determined that the following information was affected (Note: not all individuals would have all information affected): full name, social security number, date of birth, address, telephone number, bank account number, and driver’s license number, and the Ascension Via Christi location where care was provided and financed through ClearBalance.

Upon discovery of the incident, ClearBalance immediately terminated the unauthorized access and took steps to identify and remediate the cause of the incident. Passwords were immediately reset for the compromised email accounts and a review took place to determine what information was impacted. ClearBalance also took additional steps to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future, including changing all user account passwords, implementing stronger access controls on their network, and providing updated procedures for reporting suspicious activity.

Ascension Via Christi worked with ClearBalance to notify affected individuals. Although there is no indication that the information has been misused in any way, we encourage individuals to take advantage of the complimentary identity protection services provided by ClearBalance.
