Alternative Birth Center Orientation and Tour, Southfield

Join our orientation to learn how we can help you achieve a natural birth in a safe, homelike setting!

Since 1979, the Alternative Birthing Center at Ascension Providence Hospital has provided low-risk mothers a safe birth option with minimal interventions in a home-like setting. The unit supports the belief that pregnancy, labor, and birth are healthy life events. This philosophy has grown from a deep respect for and trust in the innate power and ability of women to labor and birth. Women and couples choosing this option also have the added safety of birthing in a hospital, should medical options become necessary.

ABC Orientation/Tour - Until we can resume our in-person community events, we will be holding orientation virtually. Please select the time below that works best for you and your support team. Once registered, you will receive an orientation guide with details on how to access our event and class folder. Due to Covid-19, in-person tours have been suspended. Our presentation during ABC Orientation will virtually walk you through the unit and let you know what to expect from admission to discharge! Questions? Email us at AlternativeBirth@ascension.org

ABC Providers - To birth in the ABC, you must see a provider who attends births on our unit. (They are listed in the link at the top of the page.) If you are interested in having a Midwife deliver your baby please consider joining our Virtual Q&A: Meet the Midwives Event. On the months where both events are offered, orientation will directly flow into this event at 7 pm. Unless you choose to take them on separate days, there is no need to register for both events; the information sent and the meeting rooms are the same. Please click HERE to register for Meet The Midwives, if you choose to take them separately.

Required Birthing Class - If this is your first time birthing naturally, a birthing class is required to be considered for the ABC. We hope you will do so with us! Click on "Childbirth Education" at the top of the page. Our "Birthing Naturally" classes are especially designed for the ABC but are helpful for anyone planning on a natural birth! If you anticipate any challenges with meeting this requirement, please send us an email so we can help navigate your options.
