Patients with neck and back pain now have better access to surgical care and the latest equipment, thanks to new technology at Ascension Providence.
Ascension Providence is now the first facility in Mobile to offer the O-arm™ system with StealthStation™ navigation, which gives surgeons real-time 3D images during surgery. The O-arm™ system can be used in a variety of procedures including spine, brain and orthopedic cases.
"This technology provides surgeons with real-time data during the procedure to allow for accuracy in treatment," said Rick Metzger, Vice-President of Operations and Surgical Services at Ascension Providence. "That means shorter surgical time, less pain and blood loss, and faster recovery than is possible with older technologies used in most operating rooms."
Your doctor may recommend spine surgery if you have a back or neck pain that is not going away with
other treatment. Doctors may recommend spine surgery if you have a condition that surgery may help, such as:
- Herniated disk
- Spinal stenosis or narrowing of the spinal canal
- Scoliosis or other spinal deformities
- Spinal instability (spondylolisthesis)
- Spondylosis
- Broken vertebra
- A tumor in the spine
- An infection in the spine
The O-arm combines low-dose x-ray imaging and fast image processing to provide live 3D navigation during surgery. It enables the surgeon to obtain highly detailed images of the surgical site in seconds, all without moving the patient. This results in more accurate placement of spinal hardware, often with smaller incisions, shorter surgical time, less pain and faster recovery. This unique technology is now in use at Ascension Providence, which is Mobile's leader in spine surgery volumes. To learn more, visit
