In-Office Procedures

We able to offer several outpatient services as in-office procedures. These are a few of the most common:

Cystoscopy

Cystoscopy is a procedure that lets the doctor look directly into your urethra and bladder. This is done using a cystoscope, a telescope-like instrument that contains special lenses, fiber optics and is flexible to bend around the curves in the urethra. Cystoscopy can be used to help diagnose a problem with your urethra, bladder or kidneys.
There is no preparation of this exam, however, if you have an artificial heart valve, artificial joints, pacemaker or implanted defibrillator, please tell us prior to your appointment.

Cystoscopy and Bladder Biopsy

The doctor may take a small sample (biopsy) of tissue during the cystoscopy. This can be used for the diagnosis and treatment of certain conditions.

There is no preparation of this exam, however, if you have an artificial heart valve, artificial joints, pacemaker or implanted defibrillator, or you are prescribed Coumadin or any other blood thinner, please tell us prior to your appointment. Patients should not take any aspirin products for five (5) days prior to their procedure.

Prostate Ultrasound & Biopsy

Ultrasound scanning uses harmless sound waves to generate images of the prostate and allows us to create video and still images for interpretation as well as facilitates the physician ability to guide a biopsy needle to areas of concern. Indications for this procedure include an abnormal prostate exam and/or an elevated PSA blood test.

Preparation of this exam includes the following:

  • Pre-appointment notification to our staff if you have an artificial heart valve, artificial joints, pacemaker or implanted defibrillator, or you are prescribed Coumadin or any other blood thinner.
  • Patients should not take any aspirin products for seven (7) to ten (10) days prior to their procedure.
  • Patients will receive a prescription for an antibiotic medication. Please take this as directed.
  • Two (2) hours prior to your appointment patients must utilize a Fleet enema. This can be purchased without a prescription at any pharmacy.
  • There are no dietary restrictions; however we suggest a light meal prior to your visit.

Urodynamic Evaluation

Urodynamics is an in depth evaluation of the function of the lower urinary tract. These studies are important in diagnosing problems of loss of urinary control, urinary retention or frequency of urination. This procedure involves placing small tubes through the urethra into the bladder to measure the pressure inside the bladder.

To prepare for this procedure patients will receive a voiding log to be used for three (3) days prior to the procedure. Here they will record how much they drink, how much they urinate, any episodes of leakage, urgency and the time of these events. This information helps our staff evaluate the nature and severity of the problem as well as assists with the interpretation of the data from this procedure. Patients are asked to report for this appointment with a ""comfortably full"" bladder.

da Vinci® Robotic Surgery

Patients with kidney cancer or those with prostate cancer now have additional treatment options with the da Vinci® Surgical System.

Surgery is traditionally performed using an open approach, which requires a large abdominal incision. Another approach is conventional laparoscopy. Conventional laparoscopy is less invasive but limits the doctor’s dexterity, visualization, and control, compared to open surgery. With da Vinci®, surgeons can operate with greater precision and control through tiny incisions, minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes.
Visit the da Vinci® Robotic Surgery section of our website for more information about da Vinci® Robotic Surgery.

We are currently using da Vinci® minimally invasive robotic surgery to perform the following surgeries:

  • Partial Nephrectomy
  • Prostatectomy

Partial Nephrectomy

Partial nephrectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the cancer within the kidney and some of the tissue around it. A partial nephrectomy may be done to prevent loss of kidney function when the other kidney is damaged or has already been removed.

Prostatectomy

If your doctor recommends surgery to treat your prostate cancer, you may be a candidate for a new, less-invasive surgical procedure called da Vinci Prostatectomy. The da Vinci Prostatectomy (dVP) performed with the da Vinci Surgical System represents the fastest growing treatment for prostate cancer today. da Vinci Prostatectomy incorporates a state-of-the-art surgical system that helps your surgeon see vital anatomical structures more clearly and to perform a more precise surgical procedure.

Targeted MRI/Ultrasound Fusion Biopsy

Lourdes is proud to offer a powerful MR solution for analysis, planning and targeted biopsy of the prostate. This complete clinical MR solution for the prostate consists of DynaCAD for Prostate and the UroNav fusion biopsy system - a comprehensive solution which offers a cutting edge imaging option for many patients with elevated and/or rising PSA levels.

Targeted MR/ultrasound biopsy is poised to become the new standard in prostate care, and Broome Urology at Lourdes is pleased to be one of the first urology groups in the area to offer this powerful solution to our patients. UroNav fuses pre-biopsy MR images of the prostate with ultrasound-guided biopsy images in real time, for excellent delineation of the prostate and suspicious lesions.

The fusion of the MR and ultrasound images uses electromagnetic tracking, similar to your car’s GPS system; a tiny tracking sensor attached to the trans-rectal ultrasound probe generates a small, localized electromagnetic field that helps determine the location and orientation of the biopsy device. A sophisticated algorithm maintains the fusion of MR and ultrasound images, even when the patient moves.

Finding cancer early means treatment begins earlier – contact your physician to schedule your annual prostate examination.
