Expertise Treating Injuries from Sports and Play
Ascension orthopedic doctors/care teams provide non-surgical treatment options for sports injuries and joint pain at locations in the Fox Valley.
Non-surgical Orthopedics Sports Medicine
When an injury happens, don’t let pain sideline you from activities you like to do. You don’t have to play a sport to see our sports medicine doctors Alex Garcia, MD, Jennifer Steinhoff, MD, or Erin Downey, PA. Our non-surgical orthopedic care team provides innovative solutions to get you back on your feet and enjoying an active life.
For an appointment with our experienced doctors, call 920-966-3700.
Sports Medicine Not Just for Athletes
If you have a new injury and need to be seen right away, go to our walk-in injury care clinic open Monday-Friday, 8 am - 4 pm. M-F (must be present by 3:50 to be seen same day).
Our doctors are fellowship trained in sports medicine. Each has extensive training in innovative treatment plans to reduce pain or dysfunction due muscle, tendon, ligament, and joint conditions.
Dr. Garcia is a former soccer player. He understands how getting hurt in practice or a game affects you physically and mentally. Our philosophy is to first control the pain, then eliminate it, while providing a personalized conditioning plan for your activities.
Dr. Steinhoff is a long-distance runner and understands first-hand what it is like to train for events, prevent injuries, and come back from them safely into the sport you love.

Concussion Assessments
If you are concerned about whether you have a concussion, do not delay in seeking medical attention. We are trained in advanced concussion assessment protocols for ages 6-22. By starting early and aggressive treatment, post-concussion syndrome can be prevented.
We work collaboratively with many of Ascension’s family medicine physicians who are also concussion trained specialists. The health and safety of our student-athlete is always our priority.
Fall Sports Injury Walk-in Clinic
During the Fall Season, our Sports Injury Walk-in Clinic is open on Saturdays from 8:30-10:30 am.
Dr. Garcia is also a team doctor for local student-athlete hockey teams. He works closely with the athletic trainers at area schools and club teams when sports injuries occur, and stresses preventive injury training and techniques.
At the Appleton, on-site athletic trainers and physical therapists are available to provide same day therapy and post-injury strength and conditioning.
QUEST Sports Performance
In addition to the athletic trainers (AT) in the clinic setting, Ascension has school contracts to provide AT services to area high schools. The athletic trainers are present at schools throughout the Fox Valley and provide the QUEST summer sports performance enhancement program. For more information about sport medicine athletic training services, contact the supervisor of athletic training, Kerrie Linsmeyer at 920-716-6360.
Related Services: The sports medicine doctors see more than sports injuries. They treat adults suffering from chronic joint and back pain using non-surgical procedures.
