Treating Children of all Ages with Eye Disorders

Ascension Northeast Wisconsin provides full-service eye care to children of all ages.

Pediatric Eye Care

Ascension Ophthalmologists and Optometrists recommend that children between ages 2 and 5 years old have their first pediatric eye exam. Don't wait for the vision screening in elementary school. If your child is unusually clumsy or has problems paying attention, it's better to start preventative care sooner than later when the eye is developing.

Several of our optometrists and both our ophthalmologists, Dr. Nelitz and Dr. Patel, diagnose and treat children with eye pain, eye trauma or suspected vision loss. If your child has problems reading or complains of seeing grey or black spots in the central vision, see an eye specialist. Juvenile macular degeneration (JMD) including Stargardt’s disease is a genetic-related condition that causes progressive vision loss.

When a sport-related eye injury (including concussion) sidelines your child, pay attention to the symptoms. Our doctors are highly experienced treating eye trauma. Let them distinguish a poke in the eye from a serious laceration that may do long-term damage. In a life-threatening emergency, do not delay in seeking emergency medical attention.  Through the Ascension Hospital ER and our clinic, daily eye care consults are available for these types of concerns.

Throughout Northeast Wisconsin, our eye care team is committed to educating children and the community about good eye health and protective eyewear. Start by limiting screen time and helping your child refocus on activities that exercise the eye muscles, limit dietary sugars and encourage eating colorful vegetables and fruits.

Pediatric Vision Testing

Our optometrists (OD) are very good with children and will help them understand every step of the eye examination. While bright, microscopic lights might be scary at first, our eye care team is very compassionate and wants your child to have the best experience possible.

Each of our optometrists has more than 20 years of experience. We never rush the appointment. We want to get to know you and your family.

To make an optometry appointment call 920-233-7332.
