Treating Eye Diseases in Children and Adults

Ascension Northeast Wisconsin provides full-service eye care for children and adults.

Diseases of the Eye Ophthalmology

Our board-certified ophthalmologists diagnose and treat all types of eye diseases. To make an ophthalmology appointment, call:

Menasha Office – 920-727-8280
Oshkosh Office – 920-223-7330

For more information see:

Dr. Joseph Neilitz, DO

These medical doctors are also surgeons and specialize in diseases that affect eyesight and the eyelids. Sometimes your vision problems are related to other medical conditions, such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. As medical specialists, we work cooperatively with your primary care doctor to help manage your health concerns. For some, a neuromuscular condition (stroke, brain tumor, migraines, or multiple sclerosis) can trigger vision problems. Talk to your doctor about any vision changes you may be experiencing and if you should see an ophthalmologist.

What to Expect

The ophthalmology and optometry eye health clinics provide personalized and compassionate services.  If you have an acute eye condition and sudden vision changes that need immediate medical attention, contact our office during daytime hours; after hours go to an Ascension Hospital ER.

Urgent symptoms may include:

  • “Bloody” eye with or without a suspected foreign object
  • Eye pain and increasing eye pressure
  • Infection in the eye, lid or tearing ducts
  • Vision loss in one or both eyes

Many advanced diagnostic tests are available in clinic to evaluate your total eye health, including visual field testing, spot screener, and the optic nerve head analyzer.

Our ophthalmologists are also on call for traumatic eye injuries and infections through the Ascension Emergency Medicine Departments at St. Elizabeth Hospital (Appleton) and Mercy Hospital (Oshkosh)

For annual eye exams or renewal of your eye prescription, see an Ascension Optometrist. We encourage children by age 4 to have their first eye exam.

Surgical and Therapeutic Eye Treatments

As eye surgeons we use technologically advanced lasers and minimally invasive technology to repair and heal eye disorders, like cataracts and glaucoma. The quality and sophistication of our Surgical Eye Department is unsurpassed in Wisconsin and in the Midwest. Our LASIK technology is versatile and applies to many types of surgical procedures. We also use topography-guided (WaveFront) laser procedures.

Causes of Blindness by Race

For seniors with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), we have a high success rate with anti-VEGF injections. Medical studies show this type of therapy controls the blood vessels that form under the macular and leak blood and fluid into the eye. Intravitreal injections have been shown to prevent legal blindness. Vision changes can be frustrating and life-changing. Our staff is very caring and experienced, offering the latest treatments and with long-term follow-up care.

We also surgically correct misaligned eyes and drooping eyelids.

Diabetes is often an underlying contributor to serious eye diseases. At Ascension Northeast Wisconsin, our focus is on providing you with a full spectrum of eye care solutions close to home. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness in diabetics. Controlling blood pressure keeps the eyes healthy. Our doctors have extensive experience in managing chronic eye conditions.
