Stroke, Brain, and Spine Care in Northern Michigan

Our reputation for stroke care comes from a comprehensive approach to treating brain, spine and stroke patients, starting with our steadfast commitment to preventing injuries and illnesses. It continues with our team of specialists, well trained and coordinated to mobilize within minutes to stabilize, diagnose, and treat complex neurological conditions.

Primary Stroke Center Certification

Since 2006, Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital has sustained Primary Stroke Center Certification by The Joint Commission in collaboration with the American Stroke Association. This certification recognizes our stroke care teams who provide advanced stroke care to meet the unique and specialized needs of stroke patients in order to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes.

As a Primary Stroke Center, Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital is a hospital-based center that stabilizes and provides emergency and comprehensive care to acute stroke patients based on individual treatment needs. Care begins in the Emergency Department where advanced neurological diagnostic tools assist in the accurate detection of stroke. For patients who are candidates for aggressive therapy aimed at reversing the damage caused by stroke, treatment is immediate and precise as brain cells deprived of oxygen and glucose die quickly. Minutes count because as the time period to administer life-saving, clot-busting drugs or other interventions is short. Following initial treatment, patients may spend time in our dedicated neurological intensive care unit. Nurses and technicians are specifically trained in neurological care and have devoted their careers to the field.

TeleStroke

When it comes to stroke, seconds matter. Which is why we developed a TeleStroke program, available at Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital, Ascension Standish Hospital and Ascension St. Joseph Hospital. We utilize high definition cameras, allowing Emergency Department physicians from Saginaw, Standish, or Tawas to interact with a telemedicine network of neuroscience specialists. Any time day or night, an ED physician can consult with an expert neuroscience specialist to assess a patient experiencing a stroke and make treatment recommendations.
