In a stroke emergency, Sacred Heart Regional Stroke Center located at the Emergency and Trauma Center in Pensacola focuses on reducing the damaging effects of stroke with fast, effective care. Under the medical direction of Terry Neill, Jr., MD, a board-certified critical care neurologist, our patients have better outcomes and are more likely to go home to continue the recovery process instead of being admitted to a nursing home.  

The Sacred Heart Regional Stroke Center is rated among the top 10 percent of stroke programs in the nation. We have a “Gold-Plus” rating by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association. Sacred Heart is the only center in Northwest Florida designated as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration.

Coordinating a strong continuity of care enables our patients to achieve a higher quality of life. Precise, no-incision treatment for brain tumors

Our neuroscience and radiation oncology teams are highly skilled in treating complex brain conditions, such as tumors, cancers, AVMs and trigeminal neuralgia with precision medicine and innovative treatments. The Sacred Heart Gamma Knife Center is the only one of its kind in Northwest Florida. Non-invasive brain radiosurgery is done with the FDA-approved Gamma Knife Perfexion instrument. This outpatient procedure is an alternative to traditional brain surgery and whole brain radiation therapy for the treatment of difficult brain conditions. Disorders treated with Gamma Knife include trigeminal neuralgia.

A single, high dose of precisely focused radiation is applied to the target in the brain while leaving surrounding healthy tissue virtually unharmed.

Nerve Studies

The Neurodiagnostics Center at Sacred Heart Hospital provides the latest technology for diagnosing neurological disorders, including epilepsy, pain related to spinal nerves and compression neuropathies such as carpal tunnel syndrome and neuromuscular diseases.
Neurodiagnostic Center capabilities include:

  • Nerve Conduction Velocities/Studies (NCV)
  • Electromyography (EMG) 
  • Electroencephalogram (EEG)

EMG and nerve conduction studies are ordered together for the purpose of evaluating a peripheral nerve from its exit from the spine to its end. EMG and nerve conduction studies are overseen by our medical director, George Dmytrenko, M.D., Ph.D., and Lawrence King, M.D.
