Diagnosing Epileptic Seizures
Seizures affect one in ten people throughout their lifetime but these brain conditions vary. There are more than 40 different types of seizures. Our epilepsy specialists are neurologists with specialized training in all types of brain conditions. During the exam, your doctor will check hearing, eyesight, and perform muscle tests. Brainwave testing with an EEG (electroencephalogram), brain MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), and other neurological tests are part of a full diagnostic work-up.

- Medications – Managing seizures with novel antiepileptic (anticonvulsant) medications.

- Vagus nerve stimulation – This therapy involves a small implanted stimulator device implanted by the left vagus nerve in the neck. The stimulator sends regular, mild electrical stimulations through the nerve to calm down irregular electrical brain activity that may lead to seizures.
- Surgery – Neurosurgery procedures repair brain and nerve disorders and may be recommended.
