Our care starts by listening to you. Then, we work together to create a care plan that helps protect your heart and improve your cancer therapy at any stage of your cancer treatment.

Some cancer treatments can be harmful for your heart. That’s why we created a cardio-oncology program. Our program provides specialized heart care to patients who are either currently being treated for cancer or have completed treatment. Inpatient and outpatient consultative services are available to talk about your heart health and cardiac concerns from cancer therapy.

And, our specialists manage co-existing heart disease in cancer patients. Our highly experienced cardiologists and oncologists work together to create personalized care plans to help prevent heart disease, and maintain a healthy heart during and after cancer treatment.

Benefits of a cardio-oncology program

When you choose Ascension Wisconsin cardio-oncology to deliver your care, you get an entire team of cancer and heart specialists dedicated to your care. Our cardio-oncology care team will:

  • Provide heart evaluations for those with cancer

  • Help detect toxic cardiac side effects from cancer therapies
  • Help prevent or reduce further cardiac damage — and when possible — reverse it
  • Help minimize heart damage from cancer treatments

When to be evaluated by a cardio-oncology specialist

You should be evaluated by cardio-oncology specialists if you have:

  • Received or plan to receive a cancer treatment or drug that is toxic to the heart.
  • A concerning heart symptom.
  • A history of cardiac disease, such as coronary artery disease, arrhythmia, or heart failure.
  • More than one cardiac disease risk factors such as:
    • Family history of heart disease
    • Age 60 or older
    • History of smoking
    • Obesity
    • High blood pressure
    • High cholesterol
    • Diabetes
    • Physical inactivity
    • Poor diet

After seeing your oncologist and designing a personalized care plan, our cardio-oncologists will help minimize risks and monitor for heart problems before, during and after cancer treatment. If you are having symptoms of a heart condition, talk to your oncologist or primary care doctor right away. Be sure to discuss potential side effects that may be caused by your cancer treatment with your doctor.

Questions to ask your current provider
