Advanced Treatments for Peripheral Artery Disease
St. Vincent’s specializes in the treatment of peripheral artery diseases (PAD) with advanced treatments and expertise.
St. Vincent's Peripheral Artery Disease
Our skilled teams are here when you have a circulatory problem in the legs or arms. If PAD goes untreated, blood clots may form in the legs, with swelling and pain. When there are blockages in these veins, your heart function and brain may also be affected. For more information about all types of peripheral vascular diseases, call 205-939-7878.
PAD is a category of conditions and includes:
- Chronic venous insufficiency
- Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
- Varicose veins
Our doctors provide personalized care plans and integrate them with your total health needs. Adults with diabetes have a higher risk of developing PAD. We focus on therapies to restore better circulation, so these patients can prevent diabetic foot ulcers or other venous ulcers on the legs. Restoring good blood flow to the foot is essential for healing sores and maintaining healthy foot care.
At St. Vincent’s, our specialists have expertise in the latest vascular treatments:
- Medication therapy for PAD
- Angiography with carbon dioxide as a valuable tool to diagnose and treat patients with peripheral arterial disease and renal insufficiency. This technology is helpful for patients with diabetes and those who are allergic to imaging contrast mediums.
- Minimally invasive laser ablation therapy to close damaged veins and reroute the blood flow to healthier veins for better circulation.
Treating Chronic Vein Insufficiency (CVI)
Chronic vein insufficiency occurs when there is a problem with the blood flow from the veins in the legs back to the heart. The valves inside these veins may be damaged and cause fluid to pool in one or both legs. CVI can be present with or without varicose veins. At St. Vincent’s, we have a simple ultrasound screening test to determine if you have higher than normal blood pressure in these leg veins that may be causing leg pain and heart problems. Radiofrequency ablation is used to correct the problem. Performed as an outpatient procedure, our patients benefit from quicker recovery times with less swelling and leg pain.
