Heart and Vascular Health

Specialists in Cardiac Imaging

Eight Ascension Seton medical imaging centers in Central Texas provide extensive cardiac diagnostic imaging, including the Heart Healthy CT scan.

Cardiac Imaging in Central Texas

In the greater Austin area, we are proud to continue Seton’s long tradition of excellent cardiac care, as one of the region’s most innovative heart programs. From preventive heart and stroke screenings to diagnostic imaging of your heart, arteries, and circulatory system, our hospital imaging centers provide high-quality testing.

Extensive Diagnostic Cardiac Imaging Capabilities

Our heart care teams have access to advanced cardiac imaging tools to help improve how we evaluate the heart problems. Our cardiac imaging teams uphold the highest standards in radiological testing and provide an environment to make our patients as comfortable as possible.

Before scheduling your imaging test, you need a referral from your primary care doctor or cardiologist at Seton Heart Institute. For questions, please call 512-324-9999, ext. 21855.

Men (age 40+) and women (age 45+) can self-refer for a Heart Healthy CT scan. The $75 screening test helps detect abnormal calcium buildup in the coronary arteries. Adults younger than the required age need a doctor’s referral. Schedule an appointment now.

Ascension Seton Heart Report: Cardiac MRI Technology and its benefits to heart patients.

  • Cardiac MRI is the gold standard and the most advanced imaging technology available for diagnosing heart disease. There is no radiation exposure, and doctors view the heart in high definition.
  • Chest X-ray is a traditional tool used to evaluate potential chest trauma and heart-lung disease.
  • CT angiography, in combination with the HeartFlow® test helps improve overall diagnosis and treatment of coronary arteries and heart structures.
  • Echocardiography [echo test] is a painless ultrasound test used visualize heart function.
  • Electrocardiogram (EKG) records how your heart’s electrical system is working. A digital record becomes part of your electronic medical history, so your doctor can quickly assess during routine checkups and emergency care.
  • Exercise stress test uses the EKG to recorder your heart’s electrical activity while walking on a treadmill.
  • Event monitor is a small recording device that records your heart activity anytime you are experiencing cardiac symptoms. This device is part of our cardiovascular telehealth monitoring services.
  • HeartFlow® cardiac imaging creates a 3D image of the heart and arteries to detect blood flow blockages.
  • Holter recording is a device that continuously records the electrical activity of your heart for 24 hours.
  • Nuclear cardiology imaging – Cardiac PET scans include a small amount of radioactive material to create 3D images of the heart structure to evaluate advanced heart failure and complex medical conditions.
  • Myocardial perfusion test (nuclear stress test) helps your doctor see how your heart muscle works at rest compared to when it is working hard during exercise.
  • Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) uses an ultrasound probe placed in your esophagus to create images of the heart structures.
  • Tilt table testing with imaging evaluates your blood pressure and heart rate while mimicking the conditions of a fainting episode.

Diagnostic imaging for vascular conditions include tests to evaluate the peripheral arteries in your legs, carotid artery to your brain, the renal artery, and other lower extremity veins conditions. Interventional vascular specialists provide vein care solutions to help improve circulation and reduce pain, swelling and manage restless leg syndrome. Lower extremity peripheral artery testing and ankle-brachial index are used to evaluate the condition of your arteries in your legs.

HeartFlow with CCTA: Transforming the Way We Diagnose Coronary Artiery Disease

Ascension Seton is the first health system in Central Texas to implement the 3D HeartFlow® imaging technology with artificial intelligence (AI). Doctors and radiologists use HeartFlow to evaluate a resting coronary CT scan of your heart using the 3D-modeling tool. The image is color-coded with vessel-by-vessel detail to help improve the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease and coronary blood flow problems. The artificial intelligence software analyzes the complex functional and anatomical data to assist the doctors as they interpret the results of the coronary CT angiography (CCTA) test. Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin is the first hospital in Central Texas to provide this type of advanced heart imaging technology to Central Texans.

Show Your Heart Some TLC with a Heart Healthy Screening

To learn more about our heart health, schedule a Heart Healthy CT scan. Use this online scheduling tool or call the location nearest you. Weekend appointments are available.

This heart screening test is recommended for men (age 40+) and women (age 45+) with one or more of these heart disease risk factors:

  • Hypertension (blood pressure greater than 140/90)
  • Cholesterol level greater than 160/LDL
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Tobacco use
  • Family history of heart disease

The simple, painless test helps determine your risk for heart disease. A CT scanner identifies your coronary calcium score (an estimate of cholesterol plaque build-up in your arteries). A higher score can mean a greater likelihood of having a heart attack.

Taking the Next Step

Within two weeks, a report including your coronary calcium score is sent to you and your primary care doctor. As part of your follow-up care, Ascension doctors and care teams provide preventive care, additional testings, and thorough cardiac risk assessments, so you get a heart care plan that is right for you. At Seton Heart Institute, the Women’s Heart Center provides a heart risk assessment program customized for the needs of women.

Who is not a candidate for the Heart Healthy CT Scan?
This screening test is NOT recommended for adults who have previously had a Heart Healthy CT Scan or been diagnosed with or treated for coronary artery disease, acute myocardial infarction, stents, bypass surgery, peripheral vascular disease, abdominal aortic aneurysm, stroke, or end-stage renal disease.

Is a doctor’s order required to have a Heart Healthy CT Scan?
A doctor’s order is not required to have a Heart Healthy CT Scan unless you are under-age (men 40 and women 45) or do not meet any of the heart disease risk factors.

What can I expect when getting a Heart Healthy CT Scan?
The test is painless and is performed in minutes using a CT (computed tomography) scanner. You will lay flat on your back to enter the scanner, so pants or shorts may be preferred. There are no diet restrictions and no special preparations required. Please check-in with outpatient admissions when you arrive at the hospital and bring your photo ID and payment method (cash, check or credit card).

When will I receive my test results?
A report containing your coronary calcium score will be sent to you and your primary care doctor within two weeks of your scan. The table below provides basic guidelines for interpreting your calcium score. Please consult with your primary care doctor or cardiologist to develop a plan for your heart health.

Calcium Score Interpretation
0 No identifiable atherosclerotic plaque.
Very low cardiovascular disease risk.
Less than 5% chance of presence of coronary artery disease. A negative examination.
1-10 Minimal plaque burden.
Significant coronary artery disease very unlikely.
11-100 Mild plaque burden.
Likely mild or minimal coronary stenosis.
101-400 Moderate plaque burden.
Moderate non-obstructive coronary artery disease highly likely.
Over 400 Extensive plaque burden.
High likelihood of at least one significant coronary stenosis (>50% diameter).
