Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) and Heart Rhythm Disorders

Understanding your heart rhythm disorder

Ascension Via Christi's heart care team specializes in heart rhythm disorders and atrial fibrillation (A-fib).

Caring for Heart Rhythm Disorders

The Electrophysiology Laboratory (“EP Lab”), located at Ascension Via Christi Hospital St Francis and Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg provide care for people with abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias).

Electrophysiologists and cardiologists at Ascension Via Christi treat these disorders with cardiac ablation, implantable devices such as pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and other treatments.

Your doctor may evaluate you and determine whether you should be treated in the EP Lab or if other therapies are more appropriate for your condition. He or she may refer you to a cardiologist trained in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders (electrophysiologist). The electrophysiologist, along with Ascension Via Christi’s staff, uses advanced 3D mapping and imaging systems.

Electrophysiology studies are performed in state-of-the-art procedure rooms with advanced analysis and recording equipment.

People with several conditions may be diagnosed and treated in the Electrophysiology Laboratory, including:

  • Ventricular tachycardia
  • Sudden cardiac arrest
  • Atrial fibrillation
  • Atrial flutter
  • Heart failure requiring implanted device-based therapy
  • Bradycardia
  • Syncope (fainting)
  • Supraventricular tachycardia

There are a variety of tests and/or treatments provided for the conditions above. Ascension Via Christi is currently the only EP Lab in Wichita and in Southeast Kansas offering Cryo Ablation technology in addition to traditional radiofrequency therapy.
