Y-90 Radioembolization Treats Tumors in Liver
Radioembolization, offered only at St. Vincent's East is a minimally invasive procedure control the spread of cancer in the liver.
Liver Y-90 Radioembolization
St. Vincent’s East has interventional radiologists and oncologists highly experienced in treating colorectal cancer that has spread to the liver. Using the liver’s blood supply, millions of tiny radiation-loaded microspheres flood the liver and attach to the cancer tumors in the liver. This treatment is called selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) with Y-90 resin microspheres. Specially trained doctors use Y-90 therapy to stop the growth of the cancer and help manage symptoms. It is often used in conjunction with chemotherapy.

Our interventional radiologists are on the front line applying minimally invasive procedures to complex cancer care. Y-90 radioembolization is only available in select locations nationwide. At St. Vincent’s East, our doctors have the advanced training and experience to treat and manage many types of cancer including liver, colorectal, and gallbladder cancers.
Y-90 Therapy Stunts Growth of Cancer Tumor
The outpatient procedure takes less than two hours. Using X-ray imaging and a contrast material to visualize the blood vessels, the interventional radiologist makes a very small incision to advance a catheter through the blood vessels to the artery that feeds blood to the liver. Tiny radiation-filled microspheres, so tiny only about a third of the width of a human hair, are delivered directly to the liver tumor, but not the healthy liver tissue. The microspheres deprive the cancer cells of oxygen and nutrients to slow the growth of the cancer.
There are no long-term radiation affects from yttrium-90 – within two weeks the radioactive dose is depleted. The tiny microspheres can safely remain in the liver.
At St. Vincent’s East Cancer Treatment Center, we provide many types of supportive care for the most complex cancer needs. Your quality of life is our priority.
